Steel sculpture takes shape on Brewin Dolphin Garden for inaugural RHS Chatsworth Flower Show

01 June 2017

Installation has begun of the 70m steel sculpture that will form the central feature of the Brewin Dolphin Garden at the first RHS Chatsworth Flower Show which opens next week.

Sited in the shadow of the magnificent Chatsworth House, the sculpture, which is crafted from 700 steel bars and weighs 3.5 tons, cantilevers out over the River Derwent where it appears to hang suspended in mid-air before sweeping back to the riverbank and spiralling into a circular enclosed building.  Swathes of wildflower meadow will surround the sculpture.

Garden Designer Jo Thompson said: “Installing a sculpture of this size on a site of such historic and archaeological significance has been incredibly complex. The Chatsworth Estate is extraordinary in scale and offers a totally different perspective to anything I’ve ever done before.  Such a magnificent setting deserves a spectacular installation.”

Sponsored by wealth manager Brewin Dolphin, the garden will appear in the new FreeForm category at RHS Chatsworth, intended to encourage a diverse freedom of expression through sculptural design.
